…wake me up, before ya go go…
By zacharymatthew | September 15, 2008
Imagine this echoing through the valley. It’s Wham/Jitterbug on the Concertmate 380. Anyone know the original Casio model? (thanks again, Simon!)

How does your Internet connection measure up?
By zacharymatthew | September 12, 2008
Just something to do when the Ambien wears off:
It rated me as “excellent,” which may or may not be true, but the interface is neat, nonetheless. *yawn*

The Look of Love

Casio MT-800, ROM PAK 301, song 15: The Look of Love. Doesn’t this make you want to dance in front of a fireplace? Get the fondu going.
Thanks again, Johan!

Nothing More Than Feelings
By zacharymatthew | August 9, 2008
Albert Morris’ “Feelings,” is definitely not my kind of music. But, when Casio Computer Company turns it into a demo on a ROM pak for its ever-delightful MT-800, it gets regular play. I was probably just starting to talk when it was programmed, but let’s not get caught up in quarter centuries.
I have Johan to thank for this recording of it… my version was overmodulated which only slightly deterred me from listening to it.
There are so many things to like about it: the recording is simply crystal clear; I love how many chord variations there are. If it kept up the 8-beat the whole time it would just be another song, but it BUSTS OUT THE DISCO BEAT AT THE END which is like a hug from the inside.
Look, loving demos isn’t a choice. I think I was just born this way.

Casio and Rick Astley’s Association Exposed in the MA-120
By zacharymatthew | July 30, 2008
Have you heard of Rickrolling? Why Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Let You Down was chosen is not entirely clear to me, but I would gladly take a Rickrolling any day. I love Ricky.
Perhaps a synchronicity, Simon from Canada submitted to me a brilliant rendition of “Together Forever” played by the Casio MA-120. The sounds of those early PCM keyboards never hit my sensitive ear in a comprehensively pleasing way, but this one is for the ages, for sure! Thanks, Simon!
Have a look at the keyboard here if you wish: nothing fancy; pretty standard issue for the time.
Meanwhile, Johan has sent me an overflowing cornucopia of MT-800 goodness, so look forward to that soon. I owe him some posts, but I’ve had Rick on the mind… what a benevolent scamp.

Windows 98 Startup Sound and a Couple of Others
By zacharymatthew | July 22, 2008
I was just reading a post somewhere about windows startup sounds over time and the site escapes me now.
I resurrected a Sony Vaio with Windows 98 and the startup sound brought on that transport-back-in-time feeling. Playing with it in CoolEdit, I made it very lush. It’s drunk, really. The fm7 sound is from software called same and the tadaboom might do something for you if you are familiar with the classic Windows sounds.

To all 3 of my visitors

As you can see, I am updating live. I do love this WordPress theme though. It is well-coded, and visually, all soft and crap.

Yamaha PSR 300 Demo “Original Theme”
By zacharymatthew | July 19, 2008
Oh man, when I heard this again I felt a wave of recognition, thanks to Synthmania for the great recording. I’ve made it into a ringtone for my new Samsung Juke which is turning out to be a pretty nice little music player, provided one has stereo bluetooth headphones.
I convinced a church to buy this keyboard when I was a teenager so I could hear this freaking demo song. I always got hushed. Putting some bass to it on my amplifier and sitting back provides for a delightful early ninties Yamaha experience.

Hello Again…
By zacharymatthew | July 15, 2008
… is the title of an 80s movie starring one of my favorite actresses, Shelly Long, and the title of baby’s first personal post. Ooh yeah. For newcomers, you’ll know my Web site† has had several incarnations since I finished grad school. I am exhausted from designing and redesigning when all I want to do is write. So, voici.
I’ll be writing about old/retro keyboard demos and other stuff audio. Let us just hang loose and see where this goes.
† The Associated Press Style Guide says Web site is two words—and Web is a proper noun. Take that, everyone who makes me write “website.”
